The National Youth Council has expressed strong concern about the crime rate in St Lucia following the unprecedented number of homicides registered for 2017.

The issue was among talking points when the organization met with the media at a news conference today.

Stressing that the murder rate is alarming, NYC President Jeshrun Andrew noted that the youth organization is ready to support any move to strengthen laws on possession of illegal firearms and ammunition. This he says includes moves to guard the nation’s ports and borders in an effort to make access to firearms more difficult for young people

Meanwhile Andrew noted that the NYC is also in the process of reviewing the National Youth Policy. He says based on their feedback, young people have highlighted a number of concerns with the draft document.

The review is being done in partnership with the Department of youth and sports
