One St. Lucian Man of the cloth is expected to make history next month.

The news that His Holiness Pope Francis will elevate Archbishop Kelvin Felix, Archbishop Emeritus of Castries, to the dignity of Cardinal, during the Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter, has prompted reaction from the Government of St Lucia .

This is the first time in the history of the Roman Catholic Church in the region that a member of the Episcopate from the Antilles Episcopal Conference, which covers the English, French and Dutch-speaking Caribbean, will be made a Cardinal. For this, the people of Saint Lucia, the Commonwealth of Dominica where he was born, and the region as a whole are justifiably proud.

Speaking to Archbishop Kelvin Felix earlier today on the news, he said the appointment was much a surprise to him as it was to the church.

Archbishop Kelvin felix’ appointment will take effect on February 22nd when he will receive the Red Hat at a Ceremony scheduled in Rome.

It is for such eminent service that in 2002 he was awarded the Medal of Honour (SLMH, Gold) in the Order of Saint Lucia by the Government.
