The Saint Lucia National Youth Council (NYC) is today hosting its first national student leaders summit. The Lucian Leaders’ Summit will take place from Monday 19th to Friday 23rd August at the Grande Riviere Primary School, Gros Islet where student leaders from all secondary schools are expected to gather.

The summit is being funded the United States Peace Corps and under the Participation Program of UNESCO as part of their commitment to the holistic development of youth in Saint Lucia and the Caribbean.

The week-long conference comes as a result of, what the NYC says, is a growing need for youth to be more assertive, conscious and meaningfully involved in determining the shape of their future, especially regarding St Lucia’s education system and learning cultures.

The sessions will take the form of small and large group training sessions that address issues of interpersonal communications, personal development, health and wellness, financial literacy, ICT in education. The participants will also discuss their roles and responsibilities as young leaders within the nation’s schools.

The NYC believes that the constant engagement of students is imperative for the development of youth leadership and student participation in national affairs.
