Representatives from the Diplomatic Corps, the Government of Saint Lucia and residents from communities near and far, joined residents of Vieux Fort, as they celebrated the formal opening of one of the most significant projects in the town, to date.

The ceremony to mark the opening of the Vieux Fort Square which took place on Sunday, featured remarks by the town’s Mayor, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Transformation, Community Empowerment and Local Government, as well as Parliamentary Representative for Vieux-Fort South and Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Dr. Kenny  Anthony.

Dr Anthony, who monitored the progress of the Square throughout the construction period, said he is pleased to celebrate with the people of Vieux-Fort. While many who addressed the gathering showered praise on the Prime Minister for delivering this project, Dr. Anthony insisted that no praise or honour belongs to him.

He however urged residents to guard the square jealously and to make full use of it, for family and community activities. He expressed great pleasure with the response of the people of Vieux-Fort and in particular the children, who were excited with the new community facility.

In keeping with an expressed desire to name the facility after a distinguished individual from the area, Dr Anthony invited the public to make suggestions through the Parliamentary Office or the Constituency Council, for consideration.
