The Turkish Prime Minister has come under fire for statements made following a coal mining accident that has injured scored of workers and claimed lives. In drawing parallels with 19th-century Britain he declared that "This is what happens in coal mining. There is no such thing as accident-free work."

The statements are believed to have sparked public outrage particularly among those whose loved ones have been directly affected.

The situation has caught the attention of key individuals within the Lucian Peoples Movement who have raised concerns about safety in the workplace. Mr. Melanius Alphonse stressed that the issue should be of the utmost importance and agrees that the Prime Minister’s statement was callous and insensitive.

The International Labour Organisation, a UN body, has graded Turkey as the world's third worst offender on industrial safety standards.
