The Organisation for National Empowerment has urged Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony to reconsider the VAT option on Utilities, specifically electricity as a possible way forward in reducing the island’s fiscal deficit.

The party is making the recommendation on the condition that the levy be removed as soon as the deficit is cleared. He has also charged the government to declare a specific time line for stabilizing the economy.

Party Chairman Peter Alexander notes that this is a time for shared sacrifice and the entire nation barring the poor, indigent and the marginalized should all bear part of the burden in reducing the island’s over $75 million deficit. On that basis, Mr. Alexander has made several recommendations.

Meanwhile, the party is of the opinion that all options should be placed on the table in Governments future discussions with the islands Trade unions in order to avoid any unnecessary friction and distrust.
