A total of 30 first responders from the St Lucia Fire Service are today participating in a training exercise on effective chemicals management in St Lucia.

The program has been organized by the Ministry of Sustainable Development , energy, science and technology anf jointly sponsored by the Quick Start Program trust fund under the United Nations Environment Program and the government of St Lucia.

The goal of the program is to establish a strategic approach to international chemicals management and to strengthen St Lucia’s response to the sound management of chemicals at various levels.

According to the project coordinator for the exercise Craig Henry, the program is also geared toward building capacity with respect to chemicals management in St Lucia by providing funding for technical support activities in specific priority areas. Mr Henry notes that the training is expected to give participants the know-how to deal with various situations which involve chemicals management and how to protect themselves from exposure to them.

The training exercise which began today is being held at the fire service training school in Vieux Fort and will end on Friday.
