One of three in the chain of resorts operating here has reportedly been the target of bandits who attempted to rob the establishment last night.

Reports indicate that a group of masked men who were allegedly dressed in camouflage, managed to get past security and held one reception staff at gun point.

But swift action on the part of security resulted in the would-be thieves fleeing the scene.

However, police who were immediately alerted to the incident were successful in apprehending the individuals who are believed to be suspects in what they describe as an attempted robbery early this morning.

Meanwhile, sources say the employee who was held by the gunmen has been severely traumatized and is currently receiving counseling.

The incident has become a cause for serious concern, and has highlighted the vulnerability of the tourism sector and its stakeholders.

Among them is former President of the St Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association Berthia Parle who has pointed to the economic situation as a cause for such attacks.

However she opines that these problems can have a devastating effect on the local tourism industry, which is at the moment one of the largest employment sectors here.

Most importantly she adds the safety of guests and staff must be a priority.

Mrs Parle is hopeful that industry stakeholders can meet soon to discuss additional safety measures that can be employed to secure hotel properties here.
