A recent spate of drowning here has been drawing attention from a growing number of experts who have stressed that the issue must not be taken lightly.

A total of four people have lost their lives as a result of drowning between the months of July and August this year.

Speaking on the recent spate of tragedies, President of the St Lucia Life Saving Association Jermaine Anthony says the situation warrants a long and sustained program of public awareness on water safety in general.

Mr Anthony has also issued a challenge to local authorities to establish legislation that will guide the operations of the water sports sector.

Mr Anthony agrees that such regulations must also form part of the national emergency management plan, more so, he says, because of the fact that St Lucia prides itself on being among the top tourist destinations in the world.
