Director of the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) Dr. Carissa F. Etienne arrived in St. Lucia on Sunday 14th September for a two day official visit.  Dr. Etienne who is a Dominican by birth, revealed that St. Lucia is the first OECS island she has visited since her appointment as PAHO Director.

Minister for Health, Wellness Human Services and Gender Relations, Hon. Alvina Reynolds was among the welcoming party at the airport to receive the PAHO Director. Minister Reynolds express her elation that Dr. Etienne is Dominican yet selected St. Lucia as the first OECS to visit since her appointment.

During her two day visit the PAHO Director met with senior officials of the Ministry of Health and pledged her organization’s commitment to assisting government, through the OECS Secretariat, with meeting the health needs of St Lucian citizens.

Dr. Carissa F. Etienne was elected Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) by the Member States of the Organization on 19 September 2012 and began her five-year term on 1 February 2013. From March 2008 until 1 November 2012, Dr. Etienne served as Assistant Director-General for Health Systems and Services at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Prior to that, as Assistant Director of PAHO from July 2003 to February 2008, she led five technical areas: Health Systems and Services; Technology, Health Care and Research; Health Surveillance and Disease Management; Family and Community Health; as well as Sustainable Development and Environmental Health.
