The fatal shooting of a mentally ill man in Vieux Fort by police this week has raised new concerns about the use of alternative means to capture people of unsound mind.

The call was made by a former Health Minister who served under a previous St Lucia Labour Party administration Dr Damian Greaves, following news that Christopher Severin was shot and killed by police during attempts to capture him in Vieux Fort.

Moves to establish the use of tasers by police in such situations appears to have stalled in the discussion phase, but Mr Greaves has offered up a suggestion that will involve a collaboration among the Ministry of health officials and local police.

Dr Greaves believes that while finances may play a part in delaying efforts to address the situation, the lack of a clear policy to guide officials on the issue remains a cause for concern.

A press statement from Police claimed that Christopher was acting in a threatening manner before he was shot once in the lower part of his body, but family members have suggested, that’s not true
