After months of doubt over the future of the National Initiative to Create Employment NICE, Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Economic Affairs, Planning and Social Security, Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony, has announced the extension of grant financing from the ALBA Bank to the Government of Saint Lucia in the amount of US$10.0 million (EC$27.0 million) over two years.

The announcement came on Sunday evening, as the Saint Lucia Labour Party held its 2014 Annual Conference of Delegates. The conference marked three years since the SLP was successful at the General Elections of November, 2011.

The Agreement with the ALBA Bank says that the grant is provided to “create job opportunities and highlight the capabilities of the unemployed individual to ensure sustainable or full-time employment in an environment that maximizes the socio-economic rewards.”

With this additional financing, the Government is expected to invest a further $3 million in training for employment in the cruise sector; increase support for small firms to expand employment opportunities; and expand on the number of jobs available under NICE.
