A fisherman who had been lost at sea after his boat was found adrift by Panamanian authorities is grateful for the efforts of those who have assisted in his safe return home. Lazarus Alfred returned to St Lucia on Friday after a successful intervention by the local government with Panamanian officials. He met with members of the press and recounted a series of events which he believes, led to his ordeal.

Mr Alfred notes that one of the biggest challenges for him was communication with Panamanian authorities after he was rescued. Mr Alfred says he lost all hope of being rescued and battled with the thought of giving up while he was lost at sea. However he was pleased to have had a visit from Health Minister Alvina Reynolds, prior to returning home.

The rescued man says he’s not so sure about going fishing any time soon, but he will be giving thought to the idea some time in the future.
