The people of neighbouring St. Vincent and the Grenadines were plunged into mourning on Monday, when a minibus crashed into the sea sometime before 8 a.m.

At least five people, including students, lost their lives. Prime Minister and Minister For Finance, Economic Affairs, Planning & Social Security, Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony has reached out to his counterpart, Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Hon. Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, to lend his support.

As of Tuesday morning, the Coast Guard and police in St. Vincent and the Grenadines continued rescue and recovery efforts in the rough seas off the north coast, but rough seas have been hampering efforts to retrieve bodies from the water.

Seventeen people were reportedly travelling in a minivan owned by the Apostolic Faith Church carrying schoolchildren to Kingstown, when it ran off the road and plunged into the sea in an area known as Rock Gutter.

Two of the students reportedly made it back to shore and called for help.

The incident is reminiscent of the Morne Sion tragedy that claimed the lives of 19 people in 2011
