Basic Tariff for Electricity Has Been Reduced
The basic tariff for electricity has been reduced.  Starting with bills for February and continuing the remainder of the year, the basic electricity tariff will be 2.6 cents less than the levy for 2013.
 
The basic tariff is what LUCELEC customers pay per unit of electricity without the fuel surcharge. It is reviewed in January of every year in accordance with the Electricity Supply Act and reflects the average price of fuel for the preceding 12 months.

Micoud South Refutes claims that he was asked to give up Constituency Seat
Parliamentary Representative for Micoud South, Mr. Arsene James, has refuted claims that the Political Leader of the United Workers Party, Mr. Allen Chastanet, wrote him a letter requesting that he, Mr. James, give up his constituency seat to allow the new political leader to run a safe election.

On Wednesday last week, talk show host and President of the Senate, Mr. Claudius Francis, read the entire letter that Mr. Chastanet allegedly sent to Mr. James on his Radio 100 morning programme.  Mr. James says that while he did not listen to the programme, he is disappointed that Mr. Francis would choose to read a fictitious letter over the air instead of carrying out a thorough investigation.

Parliamentary Representative for Micoud South Makes Statement

Parliamentary Representative for Micoud South, Mr. Arsene James, has refuted claims that the Political Leader of the United Workers Party, Mr. Allen Chastanet, wrote him a letter requesting that he, Mr. James, give up his constituency seat to allow the new political leader to run a safe election.

Carnival Planning and Management Agency Changes Signature Event
The newly installed Carnival Planning and Management Agency has announced a major change to one of the signature events on the calendar.

In announcing plans for the staging of the National carnival Queen pageant, the organization’s Public relations Officer Kentilia Louis, says the community leg of the contest has been scraped.

Hon.Dr. Kenny D. Anthony to Chair the 78th Meeting of the Monetary Council of the ECCB
Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Economic Affairs, Planning and Social Security, Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony will travel to St. Kitts and Nevis on Thursday, February 13, 2014, to chair the 78th meeting of the Monetary Council of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank at the ECCB Headquarters.

The Council will deliberate on the monetary and credit conditions in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union and will receive the Governor’s Financial Stability, Consolidation and Development Report, as of September 2013.

SLHTA to Host Chef’s in Schools Cook-Off Competition
Inspired by the achievements of Saint Lucian Chef’s over the past years, the Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association (SLHTA) will host its first ever Chef’s in Schools Cook–Off Competition” on February 22nd, 2014 as part of St. Lucia’s 35th Independence Day Celebrations.

The competition will include participation from several schools on Independence Day when student chefs will face off against each other at the Beausejour grounds.

Married Couple Capture RCI's Breakfast in Bed Promotion
A married couple has captured the coveted prize of over 10 thousand dollars worth of Prizes in Radio Caribbean International’s Valentines Day Promotion- Breakfast in Bed.

Kadia and Ivan Auguste who participated in the Valentines love note competition posted their video on RCI’s facebook page amassed 1282 likes, making them the grand prize winners.

12 St. Lucians to Receive Scholarship to Midwestern State University
A total of twelve St Lucian students will be offered places at Midwestern State University when representatives hold an open day here next week.

The event coincided with the 20th anniversary of Midwestern State University Caribbean Students Organization which is being observed this month. The celebration will recognize the almost 1200 students who have enrolled at the university since the program began.

Dr. Gale Rigobert Officially Sworn in as Leader of the Opposition
The leader of the opposition Dr. Gale Rigobert has expressed gratitude to those who have placed their confidence in her and her office.

Government Seeking to Waive VAT on Building Materials
The Government of Saint Lucia is today seeking approval from Parliament to waive VAT on the building materials included in the Construction stumulus package to February 28, 2014, when the program is scheduled to end.

The date for the end of the programme, coincides with the date of the end of the derogation granted by CARICOM for Saint Lucia to waive duties on the building materials which were included in the programme.

 Saint Lucia’s Nina Compton Named First Culinary Ambassador
Following an impressive showing that landed her one step away from clinching the title of “Top Chef” in the finale of the popular American reality TV show, Saint Lucia’s Nina Compton has been named the island’s first Culinary Ambassador.

The announcement, made by Tourism, Heritage and Creative Industries Minister Lorne Theophilus at the launch of the 23rd edition of the iconic Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival, was greeted by much jubilation and applause.

Police Investigates Vehicular Accident in St. Jude's Highway
A 25-year-old medical student has lost his life and his schoolmate in stable condition following a motor vehicle accident on the St Jude’s Highway in the southern town of Vieux Fort on Saturday about 4:am.

Dead is Omotayo ‘Tayo’ Morrison of Toronto, Canada. Maninder ‘Mani’ Kaur, 24, a US citizen, has been admitted to hospital with serious head injuries.

Caribbean Airlines Alert!
The state-owned Caribbean Airlines (CAL) Sunday said it would “work closely” with all authorities after the United States Embassy in Guyana warned Americans against travelling on the airline because of “unconfirmed threat information” relating to its flights destined for the United States.

Caribbean Airlines would like to advise the travelling public that we are working closely with all authorities to ensure that security protocols are followed,’ CAL head of Corporate Communications, Clint Williams, said in a brief statement.

Herb Black to Receive Prestigious Award

Police Force to Receive In House and Overseas Training
The Royal St. Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) is gearing for an intensified period of both in-house and overseas training and development programmes for police officers. Police Commissioner Mr. Vernon Francois says the training opportunities will deal with various dimensions of policing. However, they are all aimed at helping to further equip the police in the professional and efficient discharge of their duties.

Superintendant of Police responsible for Corporate Services and Community Policing Mr. Severin Moncherry says.  “Community policing is one of the focus areas where training will be provided. Over the past years as part of its policing plans the Royal St. Lucia Police Force has focused its attention on community policing. One would appreciate that community policing involves partnering with relevant stakeholders to fight crime and social disorder.  He says police officers will also receive Human rights training.

WRMA Raises Alarm for Latest Theft
The Water Resource Management Agency (WRMA) is again raising public alarm and seeking assistance following the latest theft of critical state owned data collection equipment . The rainfall logger which is valued at 6000 pounds was stolen from the Bexon Primary School on Monday February 3, 2014.

This jeopardizes the lives of hundreds of citizens and visitors as the data collected from the equipment is used to support national disaster mitigation and adaptation efforts.

25 Yr Old Male Injured During Police Operation
One man remains hospitalized after he was shot by police on Wednesday during an operation in New Village.

During the operation, 25 year old Lawrence Jermaine Joseph of Bois Patat, Castries sustained a gunshot wound to the leg area. The incident occurred about 12:00 noon.
