An accident on the main road from Dennery to Castries brought traffic to a stop this morning due to an obstruction in the road.

Traffic police have confirmed that the driver of a Suzuki escudo attempted to overtake traffic when he lost control.  As a result the vehicle collided with a utility pole that fell onto the road, exposing live wires.

There have been no reports of damage or injury following a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked St Lucia on Friday.

VAT Officials Confirm Reports of Non Compliance
Officials at the Vat Office have confirmed reports that some businesses have not made adjustments to the vat rate at their point of sale locations.

A new vat rate took effect here on February 1st resulting in a 2,5 percent reduction from 15 to 12.5 percent.

VAT to be Officially Reduced Today
From midnight Tuesday a reduction in VAT officially took effect bringing the levy from 15% to 12.5%. The move has been  among the campaign promises of the current Allen Chastanet administration.

Two weeks ago the Inland Revenue Department reminded the general public of the recent legislative amendment to the Value Added Tax (VAT) Act as per Statutory Instrument (SI) No.101 of 2016, which reduced the standard VAT rate from 15% to 12.5%, effective February 01, 2017.

Russia's Parliament Vote to Decriminalize Domestic Violence in Cases Where it Does Not cause "Substantial Bodily Harm"
Russia's parliament voted 380-3 on Friday to decriminalize domestic violence in cases where it does not cause "substantial bodily harm" and does not occur more than once a year.

The move, which eliminates criminal liability in such cases, makes a violation punishable by a fine of roughly $500, or a 15-day arrest, provided there is no repeat within 12 months.

Physicians and Healthcare Workers Participate in Continuing Medical Education Conference
Close to one hundred local regional and international physicians and healthcare workers are currently participating in a Biennial Continuing Medical Education Conference which opened in St Lucia today.

The CME is being hosted by St Jude Hospital in collaboration with Des Moines University in Iowa, United States, at the National Skills Development Centre in Vieux Fort.  It is being held under the theme Integrated Healthcare for the Elderly and targets Doctors, Dentists, Nurses, Pharmacists, Physiotherapists, Social Workers and Allied Health professionals.
