SRDF T20 Cricket League News

The Steel took on Barons Drive after a long break in the SRDF T20 Cricket League.

The match was reduced to 15 overs due to the late start. Barons Drive won the toss and decided to field first. The Steel took full advantage of that decision by capitalizing on the many errors committed by Barons Drive during the game. A total of 6 catches were dropped and a large number of runs were given up in over throws.

Tennis Action Set for Central Castries this Week

For the second consecutive year Renwick & Company and Tiger Tennis have teamed up to host the Renwick Championships at the Kenneth “Wriggler” King Court more commonly known as The Gardens. This year’s tournament which is presented by Mc. Vities, Oasis Water and Supreme Bleach, will be hosted from the 15th May, 2015 to 23rd May, 2015.

Through a diligent partnership between Tiger Tennis and Renwick company this year’s tournament will showcase improved standards which the organizers hope will encourage the continued development of local tennis players. Two categories that have been added to the tournament to facilitate greater participation; Veterans 35 + and a Junior favorite boys and girls sixteen (16) and under category.

Four Saint Lucians Selected for Windward Islands Under-17 Cricket Team
Four Saint Lucians have been selected to represent the Windward Islands Cricket team for the 2014 West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Under-17 tournament scheduled for early July in Tobago.

The Grenada Cricket Association (GCA) said that leg-spinning all-rounder Darel Cyrus, who was named Vice-Captain last year, has been elevated to the position of Captain while opening batsman Anil Matthew and fast bowling all-rounder Ryan John have regained their places from the 2013 team.

FIFA Releases International Rankings

Suriname and Dominica were the biggest movers in the Caribbean Football Union, in the latest international rankings released on Thursday by Football’s world governing body, FIFA.

The Dutch-speaking Caribbean country leapt 14 places to move to 13th in the CFU region and to 155th in the overall FIFA rankings.

Dominica, meanwhile, jumped 12 spots to be 16th in CFU, while rising to 165th in FIFA.

 Despite first ever Triple Century, Kevin Pietersen will not be picked for England

Reports in sections of the British media said that just hours after he scored a first-class best 326 not out on Monday (May 11), Kevin Pietersen had been told by Andrew Strauss, the new England director of cricket, that the England team still had no place for him.

Pietersen surpassed his previous first-class best of 254 in a mammoth innings for Surrey in their County Championship Division Two match against Leicestershire at The Oval. His runs came in just 373 balls as he hit 34 fours and 14 sixes to all corners of the south London venue in Surrey's first-innings total of 528 for 9.

West Indies Women Set to Square off Against Sri Lanka in the ICC Championship
Sri Lanka and West Indies will aim to boost their standings when they go head to head in round three of the ICC Women’s Championship, which starts in Colombo on Wednesday.

The series includes four ODIs but only the final three matches scheduled for 15, 18 and 20 May will count towards the eight-team ICC Women’s Championship. The top four sides from this tournament will qualify automatically for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017, while the bottom four sides will play in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier.

Mon Repos Football League Senior Club Football Competition Continues
The Mon Repos Football League Senior Club Football Competition continued on Thursday with Young Strikers going past Lumbard Youth and Sports Club 3-0. Young Strikers was led by a brace from Jason "Turtle " Constantine (40th ,56th )and Rohan Lesmond in the 70th minute. On Friday Grass Street Sports Club defeated Challengers Sports Club by 4-0 with the goals coming from Mitchum Francis 22nd, Gellan Raymond 30th, Cory Serieux 42nd, and Clint Charlery 55th minute.

Second Place for Levern Spencer at the Jamaica Invitational over the Weekend
On Saturday evening, Saint Lucia’s Levern Spencer competed at the Jamaica Invitational. Spencer, the Caribbean’s leading high jumper, and the most decorated performer in the English-speaking region, cleared 1.90m to finish second behind Nigeria’s Doreen Amata. Amata also cleared 1.90. Spencer came in seeking a 1.94m mark to join her compatriot Jeannelle Scheper in qualifying for the 2015 World Championships in Beijing. Both have qualified for the Pan American Games coming up in Toronto.

Mindoo Phillip Premier League Inter District Division 1 Two Day Cricket Tournament Continues

The St. Lucia National Cricket Association Mindoo Phillip Premier League Inter District Division 1 Two Day Cricket Tournament continued over the weekend at the Gros Islet Playing Field, with the home team Gros Islet registering a comprehensive inning and 160 run victory over Anse La Raye. Gros Islet's  dominance was spare headed by a century from Vernillius Gabriel,  a half-century from Captain Larry Edward and 5 wicket hauls from Millan David and Rene Montoute.

Anse La Raye batting first was dismissed for 88 in 29.3 overs, with Neil Labadie finishing on 23 not out. For Gros Islet, the chief destroyer was left arm orthodox spinner Millan David who bowled impressively, finishing with figures of 6 for 20 in 10 overs. Good support also came from Lee Solomon with 1 for 13 in 5 overs, Larry Edward 1 for 15 in 3.3 overs and Simeon Gerson 1 for 19 in 6 overs.

Saint Lucia High Jumper Jeannelle Scheper Now a University Graduates
Jeannelle Scheper is now a university graduate. The 20-year-old high jumper from Gros Islet now holds a bachelors degree in mathematics and economics with a minor in Spanish from the University of South Carolina. Scheper, one of 90 student athletes to graduate from USC this year, has been recruited into the master’s programme for economics. She is a women’s track and field team captain for the 2015 outdoor season, where she has been exemplary. So far, she is unbeaten in high jump, and has the top mark in the USA. She is favoured to win the Southeastern Conference title next week, and could be Saint Lucia’s first National Collegiate Athletics Association track and field champion in Division 1.

Fallout from the England West Indies Cricket Series continues as Peter Moores gets the Sack
Peter Moores left his position as England head coach on Saturday “devastated” by the decision and angered by the handling of his sacking.

News of Moores’s imminent sacking was made public on Friday while he was coaching England against Ireland in Dublin. He took a swipe at the England & Wales Cricket Board’s management of the situation in the statement announcing his departure and also felt he was not given enough time to prove himself.

West Indies Coach Phil Simmons meets with Shivnarine Chanderpaul
Coach of the West Indies cricket team Phil Simmons met with struggling West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul for a lengthy period on Monday in Barbados, as they discussed his future with the regional side.

The 40-year-old Chanderpaul who is nearing Brian Lara’s mark for the most Test runs by a West Indian, had a miserable tour against England, where he tallied just 92 runs at a lowly average of 15.33 from six innings.

Manny Pacquiao is being sued after losing to Flyd Mayweather over the Weekend

Manny Pacquiao is the subject of a lawsuit in Nevada after being accused of lying over a shoulder injury sustained before his fight against Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas.

The Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) says Pacquiao did not declare he had a problem on a pre-fight questionnaire.

St. Lucia Boxing Names team for the OECS Championship in Grenada
The St. Lucia Boxing Association has named a strong team of Five Boxers and three officials to defend the OECS Boxing title at the 2015 OECS Boxing championships scheduled to take place in Grenada from May 28th to the 31st.

The team  includes Trevon Lynch in the Bamtamweight Division, Heslie Joseph in the Lighweight Division, Lyndell Marcellin in the Welterweight Division, Marvin Anthony in the Middleweight Division and Arthur Langelier in the ST.Lucia are defending OECS Champions having won the championships when it was last held her in 2013. Joseph, Marcellin and Langelier are gold medal winners from the 2013 championships with Lynch a silver medalist from 2013. This will be Marvin Anthony’s first OECS Championships but he is a reigning gold medalist from the Creole Boxing championships.

Two West Indies Cricketers get Major Ranking Boosts after the England Test Series
KINGSTON, Jamaica — West Indies batsman Jermaine Blackwood has made a dramatic jump in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test Batsmen, following scores of 85 and 47 not out versus England in the third and final Test held in Barbados recently.

The 23-year-old leapt 31 places to 37th spot, his highest- ever position in the rankings.
