West Indies to Participate in Zimbabwe Tri-Series

West Indies will take part in a tri-series in Zimbabwe in August-September along with the hosts and Pakistan, the WICB has confirmed. It means there could be a straight contest between the two visiting sides for the eighth and last Champions Trophy spot, although the PCB and Zimbabwe Cricket are yet to confirm the scheduling of the series.

West Indies and Pakistan are currently ranked eighth and ninth in the ICC ODI rankings, with only a point separating them. Only the top-seven sides as on September 30, apart from hosts England, will make it to the 2017 Champions Trophy.

Gayle Fireworks Stuns St. Lucia Zouks

Chris Gayle’s spectacular unbeaten 90 blew away St Lucia Zouks and fired Jamaica Tallawahs to their first win of the 2015 Caribbean Premier League here Sunday.

Tallawahs restricted Zouks to a paltry 118 for nine off their 20 overs and then raced to their target off a mere ten overs, to complete a convincing ten-wicket victory at the Beausejour Cricket Stadium.

Former West Indies opener, Lendl Simmons will not be playing Test cricket for the regional side.

According to the Trinidad and Tobago batsman, until issues with the remuneration for playing the longer format of the game is addressed, he will not be interested in a return to Tests.

BBC and Combined Schools Gets Division 1 Best of 3 Finals in the KFC National Basketball League

BBC and Combined Schools got the Division 1 Best of 3 Finals in the KFC National Basketball League underway this past Sunday at the Beausejour Indoor Facility. 

Game 1 between the two youthful and athletic teams lived up to the hype as both teams were determined to win game 1.  Overtime was needed to separate the two teams with BBC edging Schools team 65 – 64 in a nail biting finish.  For his influence in the game particularly overtime Rahim Auguste was the KFC player of the game finishing with 20pts, 6rebs and 5 steals.  Kurt Raphael had a huge double-double of 18pts and 18rebs and Craig Fontelio had 14pts and 10rebs for BBC.  For Combined Schools, Pakel Gumbs was an unmovable force in the middle for his 22pts and 25rebs.  Tristan James added 17pts and 10rebs in their loss.  BBC now leads the 3-game series 1-0 going into game 2 on Saturday June 27th at 6pm.

Guinness Street Football Challenge Caribbean Finals this Weekend

The Guinness Street Football Challenge Caribbean finals set to take place on June 27-28 will see a special appearance by Guinness ‘Made of More’ ambassador and former French international football star Marcel Desailly.

The renowned footballer is well-known as a member of the enigmatic French football team which won FIFA World Cup in 1998, as well as the European Championship in 2000. The professional footballer popular for his unique style and combination of defensive, physical and mental skills, was also included in 2004 as one of the world’s greatest living players on the ‘FIFA 100’ list of notable footballers compiled by notorious Brazilian football legend, Pele.

National Road Cycling Championship to Commence this Weekend
The National Road Cycling Championship will be held on Sunday June 14th from 8.00am.

The riders will travel from the Mon Repos Gas station, travel to Vieux Fort, cover 5 laps around the Vieux Fort La Resource Circuit and return to Mon Repos covering a distance of 96km.

West Indies Looking to Bounce Back in the Second Test Against Australia at Sabina Park
Having secured a comprehensive nine-wicket victory in three days in the opening Test against West Indies at Windsor Park, Australia will be looking to continue in the same vein at Sabina Park. They will look to clinch the series 2-0 and head to England with a lot of confidence ahead of the Ashes. Australia were by far the better team and exposed West Indies' chinks in all departments in the first Test. Saint Lucia Beat Antigua Barbuda in their FIFA World Cup Opener
Antigua and Barbuda were stunned by St Lucia in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying on Wednesday.

Ministry of Youth Development and Sports Secondary Schools Under-15 Cricket Tournament Group Preliminary Continues

The group preliminary matches in the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports Secondary Schools Under-15 Cricket Tournament continued on Tuesday with victories for Sir Ira Simmons over Gros Islet Secondary, Entrepot Secondary over Castries Comprehensive, Piaye Secondary over Marigot Secondary, Beanfield Comprehensive over Choiseul Secondary and Micoud Secondary over George Charles Secondary.

At the Gros Islet Playing Field in game # 1, Sir Ira Simmons, led by a blistering half century from Gabriel Biscette completed a comfortable 7 wicket victory over Gros Islet Secondary. An opening stand of 150 between Jaquan Lucien 65 and skipper Qiana Joseph 60, allowed Gros Islet Secondary to amass 196 for 4 in their allotted 25 overs. Bowling for Sir Ira Simmons, Tyrel Lawrence 2 for 23 in 5 overs and Jerous Moise 2 for 26 in 5 overs.

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) today announced the appointment of Hero MotoCorp Ltd., the world’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer, as the new Title Sponsor of the league for a period of one-year.

WICB Announces the West Indies Female and Male Players of the Year
Jamaican Stafanie Taylor and Barbadian Sulieman Benn were named West Indies Female and Male players of the year, respectively.

The announcement was made at the West Indies ‎Cricket Board (WICB)/West Indies Players Association (WIPA) third annual Players' Award ceremony at the Jamaica Pegasus in Kingston, a short while ago.

Mon Repos Football League Finale!
The much anticipated finals of the Mon Repos Football League between La Pointe 4H and Praslin Bay United was played on Sunday in front of a packed Wenn Playing Field. The game was a keenly contested affair, with Praslin scoring in the 32nd minute through Denver Charles.

Denver's marker would prove the eventual match winner, to the near euphoria of the drones of Praslin fans, who have seen their team play unbeaten throughout this tournament. Individual prizes for the tournament were awarded to a number of players, mainly from the two finalists.

Soufriere Regional Development Foundation’s Twenty20 Cricket Competition Picking Up Steam

The Soufriere Regional Development Foundation’s Twenty20 Cricket Competition is picking up steam, with several games played in the past week. Defending champions Challengers took on Belfond, the team they defeated in the finals last year. Challengers were 52/2 in the first six overs, but after a 30-run partnership between Keither Prospere and Alex Antoine, the challenge tailed off.

The Champions lost their last five wickets for only 38 runs, restricting them to just 125. Prospere made 25 and Antoine 24. Jervan Charles and Sylvanus Augustin took three wickets each. Belfond wasted no time chasing down the runs. They broke the tournament record by scoring 84 runs in the powerplay.

Outstanding Performances from Two of Saint Lucia's Top Female Cricketers
Yasmine St Ange, the captain of the national women’s team, is currently studying at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill. There, she is a member of the UWI Cave Hill Blackbirds, a team initiated by Saint Lucia’s Eugena Gregg, a former West Indies player. This season, the Blackbirds played the Barbados Cricket Association Domestic League undefeated.

But in the opening match of the triangular Goodwill Women’s Twenty20 Tournament, Blackbirds went down to the BCA Women’s XI. Playing at the 3W’s Ovals, the BCA X1 scored 130/5 off 20 overs. Saint Lucia’s St Ange was luckless, bowling four overs and conceding 23 runs. She made nine not out as Blackbirds were held to 92/8.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul gets Among the Runs in the United States
Discarded West Indies batsman, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, has found himself among the runs again when he scored 146 not out and 77 over the past weekend. Chanderpaul put up the scores playing for Sarasota International Cricket Club, in Florida USA, according to Largo Cricket Club’s Facebook page.

Seventh Place for Levern Spencer at the Birmingham Grand Prix
Saint Lucia's Levern Spencer competed over the weekend at the Sainsbury's Birmingham Grand Prix, an IAAF Diamond League meeting in the United Kingdom. The 30-year-old from Babonneau was part of a strong field in women's high jump.

The Polish duo of Kamila Licwinko and Justyna Kasprzycka took first and second, respectively, clearing 1.97m and 1.94m, each setting her season's best. Spencer, meanwhile, continues to punch below her weight this season. Just over two weeks shy of her 31st birthday, she needed all three tries at 1.91, and missed at 1.94, which would ghave qualified her for the Olympics.

Wins for Babonneau, Gros Islet, the SDA Academy, Beanfield Comprehensive and Choiseul in Under15 Cricket

The Ministry of Youth Development and Sports 2015 Secondary Schools Under-15 Cricket Tournament continued on Tuesday with victories for Babonneau Secondary over defending champions St. Mary's College, Gros Islet Secondary over Castries Comprehensive Secondary, SDA Academy over Sir Ira Simmons, Beanfield Comprehensive over Marigot Secondary and for Choiseul Secondary over Soufriere Comprehensive.      

At the Monchy Playing Field, Babonneau Secondary registered a comfortable 64 run victory over St. Mary's College. Babonneau Secondary batting first was dismissed for 163 in 22.3 overs, with skipper Kimani Melius top scoring with 51, Stavone Gabriel 35, Rene Montoute 20 and Jelani Cupid 15. For St Mary's College, left arm spinner Simeon Gerson picked up 5 for 19 in 5 overs, Rahym Joseph 2 for 16 in 5 overs and Stephen Mitchel 2 for 25 in 3.3 overs.

Dispute between West Indies and the India Cricket Board to be Resolved Soon
Discussions between the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over the BCCI’s US$42 million compensation claim for abandoning the Test and ODI series in India last year have been going well and both parties could arrive at a resolution by the end of the month.

So claims WICB CEO Michael Muirhead, who said the regional body is very hopeful of resuming bilateral relations with the BCCI.
