Castries Cricket Association T20 Competition Semi Finals

On the eve of their 68th year in existence, New Park booked a place in the Finals of the Castries Cricket Association T20 competition with a nail biting 3 run win over archrivals Lancers last Saturday.

Sent in to bat, New Park made heavy weather of good conditions and were dismissed for 112 in 19.4 overs.  Wade Clovis 43 and Keddy Lesporis 18, were the Parkites main contributors with the bat. For Lancers Canice Richardson bagged 3/23 and Kendal Montoute 2/25.

National Lotteries Veterans Cricket Festival Scores

The Grand finals in the 2014 National Lotteries Veterans Cricket Festival will be contested between the Central Castries Veterans and the Gros Islet Veterans.

The Gros Islet Veterans booked their way into the finals after completing a narrow exciting 14 run victory over Mon Repos Veterans on Sunday at the Wenn Playing Field in Mon Repos.

Appointment of a New Director of Youth and Sports
The Ministry of Youth Development and Sports has formally announced the appointment of Mr. Jim Xavier as the new Director of Youth and Sports, effective May 1 st, 2014. He succeeds Mr. Victor Reid who had a long tenure in the position.

National Netballers for Brief Tour of Barbados
In an effort to boost preparations for participation in the upcoming Commonwealth Games, Saint Lucia's National Netball team will undertake a tour of Barbados for a three match practice series.
 
A 20 member delegation including 15 players are expected to make the tour which runs from May 27-31.  Following the tour, the final squad for the Commonwealth Games will be announced.

1st National Bank 14 & Under Northern Qualifier
On Sunday, May 25th, 2014 the Mindoo Phillip Park will come alive with the Northern qualifier for the 1st National 14 & under Games. The 2013 Juvenile Male and Female Athlete of the year Antonio Maynard and Julien Alfred fresh from the success over in Trinidad will be some of the stars on show.

Big Players Advance to Big 8 Final
Watched by a very enthusiastic and excited crowd the battle between arch rivals Big Players and a very determined Arundell Hill team was settled by one goal late in the second half of play through a well-directed header at the far post from Nikki Joseph in the 73rd minute ensuring Big Players a place in the 2014 Marchand Big 8 final. Arundell Hill squandered several goal scoring opportunities while Big Players had fewer opportunities in the first half. Big Players now await the result of today’s second semi-final between the energetic Marchand Under 21 and Bagatelle who are always spurred on  by their large following of fans.

Darren Sammy’s Captaincy and the Unfinished Quest for the Return of National Purpose
This past week the West Indies cricket selectors named a new captain of the region’s team for Test Cricket, which despite frequent obituaries remains the soul of the game. But the news was hardly about the new captain; it was more about the one who was fired—Darren Sammy. This was inevitable as Sammy is one of four significant captains in the almost nine decades of West Indies participation in Test Cricket—the others being Frank Worrell, Clive Lloyd and Vivian Richards. Note, I say significant; not best. What they all have had in common is that they assumed the captaincy and presided over the team at critical eras in Caribbean Post- Colonial history—Independence, Black Power and Radical Nationalism and Globalization/Structural Adjustment.

United States Men Too Much for St. Lucia
An experienced United States squad used a 10-0 block advantage en route to sweeping St. Lucia 25-13, 25-9, 25-9 on Thursday evening to start the Men’s NORCECA World Championship Qualification Third-Round Pool O Tournament being held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Carson Clark produced a match-high 12 points for the U.S. and Reid Priddy totaled 11 points in the victory. St. Lucia’s Joseph Clercent and Julian Bissette notched six points each in the loss.

West Indies Name 20-Man Squad to Face NZ
 The leading wicket taker in the 2014 first class competition, Kenroy Peters is one of two players from the Windward Islands called up in a squad of 20 players to prepare for the upcoming West Indies versus New Zealand Test series. The other is ace spinner Shane Shillingford.

All rounder Dwayne Bravo is one of five T&T players, alongside newly-elected West Indies captain Denesh Ramdin, Dwayne's half-brother Darren, fast bowler Shannon Gabriel and mystery spinner Sunil Narine.

WICB/SLNCA Grassroots Cricket Program Recommences this Saturday
The WICB/SLNCA Grassroots Cricket Program recommences this Saturday in 7 Communities. The programme is targeted at boys and girls from ages 11 to 17 with little or no experience in cricket.
The majority of participants in the programme are from the community and not part of existing cricket clubs. The program is under the supervision of SLNCA Coaches in the following communities:
Gros Islet, Central Castries, South Castries, Anse La Raye, Dennery, Mon Repos and Vieux Fort North. The program will be run every Saturday morning from 9 to 12 noon.

Shamrock Turns 55!
The Shamrock Sports Club will be celebrating 55 Years this May. Celebrations commence on Sunday 18th May at the Catholic Cathedral at 8am, and will be attended by all members; both past and present. The Celebrations continue on Sunday the 25th of May, with a mini nature walk, followed by Movie Night on the 27th.

Table Tennis May Championships
The St. Lucia National Table Tennis  Association hosted the Under 11 Division tournament at the Castries Table Tennis Centre.  In the boys event Independence day Champion Jordan Hunte student of the Tapion School retained his title when he defeated his cousin and school mate Jason Hunte in straight sets. It must be noted that both finalist are sons of former National Juniors. Mc Kenny Clarke of the Camille Henry Memorial placed  third.

Balca sent in to bat after losing the toss were bowled out for 242 off 34.2 Overs.  Shadrach Nestor an uncharacteristic patient 71; Alvinus Simon 42
For Raveneau:- Darell Francis 8 overs 4 for 39;  Donavan Didier 5 overs 2 for 18.
In Reply Raveneau were bowled out for just 80 off 17 overs.  Jervelle Peter 12; Nick Joseph 11.
For Balca, Chad James took 3 for 21 off 7 overs; Vincent Thomas 3 for 12 off 4 overs.

Another Gold Medal For Levern Spencer
St. Lucia's prolific highjumper, Levern Spencer, continued her fine start to the 2014 outdoor season with another gold medal winning performance in Guadeloupe last Saturday.

Competing for the first time at the "Meeting International Region Guadeloupe 2014" , Spencer, the region's premiere highjumper who is currently joint No.1 on the 2014 Iaaf  world listing, cleared a mark 1.91m to win the gold medal, setting a meet record in the process. This was the star highjumpers 5th consecutive clearance over 1.90m for this year as she continues one of her most successful seasons ever.

St. Lucia Preparing for Rugby Encounters
The St Lucia senior male rugby team will be participating in the group stage of the 2014 NACRA 15-a-side tournament scheduled to commence on May 10, 2014. St Lucia is grouped with Curacao, BVI and St Vincent with matches scheduled for May 10 in Curacao against the host, Tortolla in the BVI against BVI on June 8 and at home on June 21 against St Vincent.

The winner of the group will play against Barbados for a spot in the second stage of the tournament on a home and away basis which also involves Guyana and Trinidad in the south. The winner of this stage will emerge as champions of the south and will play against the northern champs to crown the 2014 North America and Caribbean Rugby Champions.

Le Pang of Dennery Wins 2014 Guinness Street Challenge

The very talented, youthful and skillfull  Le  Pang of Dennery emerged winners of the 2014 Guinness Street Challenge Small Goals Football competition the finals of which took place yesterday at the Vieux Fort Multipurpose Courts in Vieux Fort Town.

Le Pang defeated Fantastic of Soufriere in the finals after the final ended 1-1 after extra time. Sylverius Vidal put Le Pang  ahead in the extra time period but just before the end of the game the prolific Barry Felix who scored the most goals in the finals, four  goals, equalized for Fantastic but they lost in the penalty shoot out with Le Pang scoring one of their three penalties and Fantastic missing all theirs from the spot. Slyverius Vidal scored Three goals in the Finals for Le Pang.

Junior OECS Squash Championships
The St Lucia Squash Association hosted the 2014 annual Junior OECS Squash Championships this week at the St Lucia yacht Club. Approximately  35 dompetitors from  St Vincent, the BVI and host St Lucia started matches Thursday evening till Sunday lunchtime in male and female categories in different age categories –  under 11, under 13, under 15, under 17 and under 19.  All matches were played on a round robin basis with the under 15 category being the most competitive in both boys and girls.

Following the matches Sunday morning the Association closed with a prize giving ceremony which started first with a moment of silence in rememberance of the Association’s Vice President Oliver Gobat who went missing over the weekend and is presumed to have died tragically. Gobat was also the island’s #2 player and was in intense training for a number of tournaments coming up over the next few months including OECS to be held in May in St Vincent and culminating with the Commonwealth Games at the end of this year.
