St. Lucia Cycling Association hosts 105km Training Race

St. Lucia Cycling Association hosted a 105km Training race on Sunday March 9th 2014. the race started at the Bexon shell Gas Station travelled to Ravine Poison turn and travelled to the New General Hospital Roundabout and returned to the Bexon Shell Gass station. the riders did this circuit 4 times to cover the 105km and the Juniors under 18 years did three laps with except Andrew Norbert who completed all 4 laps.

The race started steady however it contained several early breaks which included Kenneth Mathurin and Valence Aurelien who stayed away for the first two laps. David Jamal joined the break for a while. On the 3rd lap the main bunch picked up the pace and swallowed up the break containing Mathurin. Being up front and working hard Mathurin was unable to hang on complaining of back pain.

Jordan Augier and UT Tops in USA Swimming

Jordan Augier, Saint Lucia’s 2013 Swimmer of the Year, outpaced his U.S counterparts and competitors to make record breaking times at the Sunshine State Swimming Conference held February 19-22, 2014 in Orlando, Florida.

With an impressive record of wins spanning several years of local, regional and international competition, Augier was snapped up by the University of Tampa swim team in 2012 when he was accepted there to study Economics.

St. Lucia Volleyball Congress
The St. Lucia Volleyball Association held it’s Biennial Congress at the Bay Gardens Hotel, March 1, 2014 with the participation of seven (7) member clubs. Reported were the activities and success 2012 – 2013 with President Brian Louisy highlighting where hard work has taken the sport and the potential go even further.

Beach Volleyball, being the fastest growing sport in the world and the many successes St. Lucia has enjoyed over the years, gave rise to a special presentation highlighting the journey for qualification of teams to the CAC Games and the 2014 Youth Olympics. The congress spoke to the need to change the dynamic of how the various aspects of the association is run in order to hold the course it is on and to chart new courses for opportunity and success.

United Insurance U- 19 School Cricket Scores

Another round of matches were completed on Tuesday in the United Insurance Under 19 School Cricket Tournament with victories for Ciceron  Secondary over Corinth Secondary, for Castries Comprehensive over Entrepot Secondary and for Piaye Secondary over Soufriere Comprehensive.

At the Monchy Playing field Ciceron Secondary spurred on by a 5 wicket haul from Simeon Dalakan registered a comfortable 8 wicket victory over Corinth Secondary. Corinth Secondary batting first were under mined by some very aggressive seam bowling from Ciceron Secondary only managed 124 all out in 25.4 overs with Winsley Samson 12 the only batsman to reach double figures. Simeon Dalakan led the bowling attack for Ciceron bagging 5 for 10 in 5 overs and was supported by Veron Preville who took 2 for 19 in 5 overs, Daniel Jn Baptiste 2 for 38 in 7 overs and Collinus Calender 1 for 22 in 5 overs.

National Anti-Doping Organisation launched in Saint Lucia
Representatives from several interest groups came together at the Auberge Seraphine Hotel last Saturday for the formal launching of the National Anti-Doping Organisation.

" The launching of the National Anti-Doping Organisation  will make the Saint Lucia anti-doping fraternity better able to organise itself through educational programmes, better testing schedules and allow for a completely independent body to oversee issues pertaining to doping in sport," said Dr. Kennety Louisy, a representative of the Regional Anti Doping Agency.

Results for the Cricket Finals

Four time Defending SLNCA Premier League Cricket Champions South Castries for only the second time in the last eight years, failed to capture the Premier League title. On the weekend they lost by 9 wickets to neighbours Central Castries in the two day final at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.

Central’s victory was due largely to the efforts of captain Jamal James who stroked a tournament high 147 runs in his team’s total of 273, and fast bowler Loic Prosper’s first inning’s spell of 8/51 in bowler friendly conditions.

MVYSC/Hon. Shawn Edward Football Final

A new champion will be crowned when the final of the second edition of the Hon. Shawn Edward Football Tournament rolls out this Sunday, December 8th at the La Ressource Playing Field in the Mabouya Valley between Rovers United and Survivals.

Rovers United will be making their second consecutive appearance in the final and will be hoping to go one better than they did last year after a penalty shootout defeat at the hands of Aux Lyons United whom they defeated in last week’s semi final.

Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School retained their title when they were crowned champions of the 2013 Inter School LUCELEC Under 15 Netball competition at the Vieux Fort Multipurpose Court. In a very keenly contested final Soufriere Comprehensive edged out Micoud Secondary 14 – 12.

Tribute to Michael Pierre by Levern Spencer

As I prepare to leave my temporary home in Athens, Georgia for another day of training in what I can only refer to as horrible weather conditions, I think it is necessary to finally do what I have been thinking of doing since hearing of Mr. Pierre's official retirement from the Public Service, or more specifically, the Ministry Of Youth Development & Sports and that is to say a few words concerning this remarkable individual.

To say that Mr. Pierre will be greatly missed by all sports loving students will be an understatement, and to say that he has left an indelible mark on all students who have participated in sports over the last three decades or so will be an even greater understatement. Mr. Pierre, simply put,  was the main driving force behind school sports on the island, especially track and field, and it sometimes appeared that without him there, things just wouldn't go well.

Boxers getting ready for Big Action/Guadeloupe Visit

Only one of the two St. Lucian boxers who went to Guadeloupe last weekend for a boxing card there last Friday evening saw action in the ring.

Bantamweight 56kg Travis Maynard and Middleweight 75kg Arthur Langillier along with Coach Conrad Fredericks were the ones who made the trip to the Boxing Event staged by the Guadeloupan Provincial Committee in Morne a- lau Guadeloupe.

November Monthly Golf Medal Results

The November Monthly Medal was completed last Saturday with a total of 13 participants. It was not quite the turn out we have been experiencing due to competing events which some of the kids were involved in. Despite that we still saw some competitive golf within the groups which resulted in some first time winners.

Inter-schools Cycling Festival and Championships

The Ministry of Youth Development and Sports in collaboration with the St. Lucia Cycling Association will be hosting The Inter-schools cycling Championships on Friday December 13th 2013 from 11.00 am at the Castries City Circuit.

Veterans Football Final Sunday at Beausejour Cricket Ground

The stage is set for the Grand Finals of the 2013 Veterans Football Tournament Sunday evening at the Beausejour Cricket Ground . Contesting the final will be two former champions the present defending champions Vieux Fort South and VSADC. The final is scheduled to kick off at 6.00 p.m.

Both teams have had interesting journeys to the final. The defending champions Vieux Fort South in their five matches getting to the finals won four and lost one. VSADC in their five matches getting to the finals played unbeaten with three wins and two draws.

St. Lucian boxers for Boxing card in Guadeloupe

A contingent of two boxers and one official will represent ST.Lucia this weekend at a Boxing Card in Morne –A- L’Eau Guadeloupe put on by the Guadeloupan national Boxing Committee. The card will be held Friday evening.

The boxers making the trip to Guadeloupe are 56kg Bantamweight Travis Maynard who is making a return to the sport after a short absence through injury and other personal reasons,and Middleweight Arthur Langillier a double gold medalist for ST.Lucia during their championship winning  campaigns at the OECS and Creole Boxing championships earlier this year.

Two former champions to Contest 2013 Veterans Football Tournament Finals
Two former champions VSADC and Defending champions Vieux Fort South will contest the finals of the 2013 Veterans Football Tournament . Both teams booked their spots in the finals with one nil wins over their semi final opponents last evening at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.

In the first semi final a strike five minutes into the encounter by Felix Ullyses Mark gave VSADC a one goal to nil win over Laborie  and a spot in the finals.
