Raise Your Voice Saint Lucia is concerned about what it sees as the strong action taken by the Department of Education against a parent who has been fighting discrimination against her child.

Louina Joseph has for years complained about the mal treatment and neglect of her son at school because of his rare medical condition.

But Raise Your Voice Secretary Catherine Sealys says she is incensed that the Department of Education has unleashed the power of the government against a poor, defenseless, vulnerable and marginalized mother, threatening legal action against Louina Joseph.

Sealys says the group’s initial involvement in the situation came in 2012 and it was believed that the matter was resolved. However, the marginalization of the child by teachers and students at school has continued to persist without any meaningful and humane intervention from the Ministry of Education.

The student suffers from a rare medical condition that is not contagious and as such does not present a threat to teachers or students.
