Local Met Officials Issue the All Clear for St. Lucia

Local Met Officials have issued the all clear for St Lucia as hurricane Maria continues to track north westward away from Saint Lucia and the threats from the hazards associated with this system continue to diminish.

Speaking with RCI news today, Met Officer Shem Willie informed that at 8:00 am today, the centre of hurricane Maria was located 194 miles or 312 km northwest of Saint Lucia. However, scattered moderate to heavy rainfall and gusty winds associated with the outer bands of Maria are expected during the next 12 to 24 hours.

LUCELEC Reports that Saint Lucia's Infrastrcture Held Up Very Well During Hurricane Maria

Officials at the St Lucia Electricity Services Ltd are reporting that the main electricity infrastructure held up fairly well during Hurricane Maria and that none of the substations or the main 66kV infrastructure was affected.

However, LUCELEC has received reports of a number of localised area faults including interruptions in the electricity supply to pockets of customers in various locations, sparking on electricity lines, as well as fallen trees or branches on distribution and service lines.

The Director at the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) has supported calls for mandatory enforcement of orders for islandwide shutdown in case of disasters.

This comes amid reports that some businesses have ignored the advice issued by Acting Prime Minister Lenard Montoute for the closure of schools and businesses to remain closed as St Lucia and other islands in the Lesser Antilles braces for the effects of Hurricane Maria today.

Department of Infrastructure Announces Closure of Section of Castries on Saturday

The Department of Infrastructure, Ports and Energy has informed the motoring public that a section of the Castries – Gros Islet Highway, Choc Roundabout to Marisule Intersection will be closed from 4p.m. on Saturday 16th September 2017 to 5a.m on Monday 18th September 2017. This is to allow for repairs to the riding surface of the Choc Bridge.

All commuters are asked to be guided by road signs which will be placed for their information and guidance. As a result, traffic will be diverted via Corinth – Grande Riviere Main Road through to Postlewaithe Road onto Allan Bousquet Highway towards the Choc Roundabout and vice versa.
